Homeownership FAQ

I don't have any children, can I still apply?

Yes. Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent partners with families and individuals.

Does Habitat give their homes away for free?

No. Habitat partner families pay an interest-free mortgage geared to their household income. Habitat homeowners also agree to invest 500 volunteer hours also known as "sweat equity" prior to purchasing their Habitat home.

What if I have filed for bankruptcy?

You must be discharged from bankruptcy and/or completed your consumer proposal before you can qualify for our Homeownership program.

Will a low credit score prevent me from qualifying?

Credit checks are required as part of our approval process.  A low credit score would not prevent you from being approved, however large debts may have an impact on your eligibility.

Are there any restrictions that would prevent me from qualifying?

Eligible partner families must reside in Chatham-Kent for at least 2 years.  They also cannot own other property.
Our Habitat Chatham-Kent Online Eligibility Assessment is a great tool that can help identify factors that might disqualify your application.
